A multinomial model of source-monitoring: The case of illusory correlation

Illusory correlation refers to an erroneous inference about the relationship between two events that are not actually correlated. To detect the sources of such phenomenon, both a hierarchical log-linear and a multinomial source-monitoring (Multinomial Processing Tree, MPT) model were employed. Results show that both models are capable of detecting the direction of the response bias, but only a MPT model can directly measure the contribution of the latent cognitive processes giving rise to the phenomenon.
