Factors that favor male and female youth political participation and alienation: Construction and validation of two motivational scales

This study presents the construction and validation of two scales measuring political participation and political alienation motives among young people. The research involved 461 participants (non interested in politics, interested in politics, militant in political parties, and no global). Both instruments presented a two-factor structure. The two dimensions of the political activism scale refer to idealistic and materialistic motivations. For the political alienation scale, the two subscales are lack of self-confidence and political alienation. The results showed good psychometric properties of the scales with respect to reliability, construct and criterion validity. Finally, gender differences were explored.
