The measurement of job satisfaction in organizations: A comparison between a facet scale and a single-item measure

Job satisfaction may be defined in global or specific terms: the literature therefore offers instruments of a general or analytical nature. This research analyzes the properties of a single-item instrument for the measurement of the global job satisfaction. All the employees of a firm were presented with a single-item instrument as well as an eight-factor questionnaire on two separate occasions, at a distance of one year. Results show that, if the aim is to analyze specific aspects of job satisfaction, the use of an analytic questionnaire taking separate factors into account is appropriate, whereas, in the assessment of global job satisfaction, a single-item instrument is preferable to a composite measure.
