The concept of sustainable urban development based on cultural heritage has not yet become mainstream. The potential of cultural heritage must be unleashed to achieve sustainable urban development, especially in heritage cities. Cultural heritage offers solutions to urban challenges and contributes to well-being for communities. Urban design principles may contribute to investing in cultural heritage as a resource for sustainable urban development in heritage cities. Thus, the research problem as (The knowledge gap regarding the effectiveness of cultural heritage in achieving sustainable urban development in heritage cities, and the contribution of urban design principles to this). Assuming (the effectiveness of cultural heritage in achieving sustainable urban development for heritage cities, through following specific design principles that work to invest cultural heritage in heritage cities). The study dealt with the analysis of the city of Fez, the old city in Morocco, with the possibility of benefiting from it from other heritage cities, including Iraqi cities. The research reached the effectiveness of cultural heritage in enhancing urban development for heritage cities by following specific urban design principles.
