It focuses on their history, population, social groups, occupations, religious life, education, language, family life and cultural practices. Tamil Muslims had strong connections with maritime trade and developed important settlements along the Tamil coast. Census records show that the Muslim population of the Madras Presidency increased from about 1.92 million in 1881 to 3.31 million in 1931. The study also looks at communities such as the Marakkars, Labbais and Rowthers and their different social and economic backgrounds. Special attention is given to the relationship between Islamic traditions and Tamil culture, including Arwi language, mosques, madrasas, Sufi shrines, festivals, food, dress and marriage practices. The study also examines the impact of modern education, colonial rule, economic changes and social reform on Tamil Muslim society.
